The first ever Laura Ashley store was opened in Machynlleth, a market town just north of Aberystwyth.
The shop opened at 35 Maengwyn Street, and for 6 years the Welsh fashion designer and her family lived above the store. The location is now commemorated with a plaque to inform passers by of the buildings history.
From its humble beginnings in this corner of Mid Wales, the company grew and grew until it was eventually floated on the stock market in 1985, and today it is still one of the most well known highstreet interior design brands with a large number of stores across the country.
