Rachels Dairy, the makers of the products you see on all the supermarket shelves started up in Borth and is now produced in Aberystwyth on Glan Yr Afon Industrial Estate.
The dairy started out its life around Borth bog, heading out towards Dolybont and became Britain’s first certified organic dairy farm.
The business started to grow into what it is today during a freak snowstorm in the mid 1982, which caused the dairy farm to churn its own butter and make its own cream to sell locally as supplies struggled to reach the area, and they struggled to deliver their milk to buyers elsewhere.
This event triggered the growth of the business as a market opened up for these products, and a wider range of traditional recipes which eventually came to the attention of the supermarket.
Other local business successes include Ty Nant Water, which is recognised at the premium bottled water brand with its cobalt blue bottles, that comes from a spring in Bethania. And we also have Laura Ashley which started life in Machynlleth.
